First in the Nation Suffrage Celebration

On August 26, 1920, the U.S. Congress ratified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and granted woman the right to vote. On August 27, 1920, eighty-seven South St. Paul woman were the first to vote in the United States. Joining the men of the community, an $85,000 water bond was voted on and passed. Miss Margaret Newburgh of South St. Paul voted at 6 a.m. in her precinct and is given the title of first woman to vote under the 19th Amendment.
Join the City of South St. Paul for the 2nd Annual First in the Nation Suffrage Celebration on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the South St Paul City Hall. We will commemorate South St. Paul's important role in our Nation's Suffrage History. Included in this celebration is the Pass the Torch Award presented to Girl Scouts to encourage girls to document and share their stories.
