Business Recycling
The commercial sector generates more than half of the total waste in Dakota County, and nearly two-thirds of the waste from business, non-profits and other organizations is recyclable.

Commercial building owners in the seven-county metro area, including Dakota County, that generate four cubic yards of trash per week must recycle at least three materials.

Recycling is an important way to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills, and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions it takes to manufacture new materials.

Dakota County offers free bin labels to all business in the County at no charge. Businesses can also apply for funding up to $10,000 per location to jump-start or improve recycling, start organics recycling (food waste) programs, or to reduce waste. Visit Dakota County's website for more information on how to apply for funding.

DAKOTA COUNTY SEEKS MULTI HOUSING INPUT ON TRASH AND RECYCLING PLAN:

Dakota County would like to hear specifically from multi-unit property owners and managers about proposed trash and recycling strategies. Dakota County is revising its County Solid Waste Master Plan, which will guide proper waste management within Dakota County for the next 20 years. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has proposed new strategies that the County must consider, such as implementation of the state’s commercial recycling mandate requiring most businesses, including multi-unit residential buildings, to recycle at least three materials. Other strategies related to recycling include education for tenants, trash/recycling collection, organics/food waste recovery, and disposal of bulky items.

Property owners and managers with multi-unit properties in Dakota County are encouraged to provide input on critical questions through a special 4-question survey that is open online through May 31, 2017. Please take the “Multi-unit Survey” HERE. We would like to know what you think about proposed strategies and what would work best for you. Thank you in advance for providing your input.
